2015 Balboa Carmenère, Walla Walla Valley, Summit View Vineyard ($50)

This variety is often noted for its green characteristics but, coming from the warmest vintage that the state has seen, this wine is very much not that. All coming from Summit View Vineyard, it has appealing aromas of black pepper, jam, whiffs of jalapeño and black fruit, followed by rich, full-bodied dark-fruit flavors with plentiful peppery accents. It’s a hedonistic delight, a full-throttle interpretation of this variety – Sean P. Sullivan, Wine Enthusiast, 91 points.

Opaque purplish-crimson colored, this wine emits intense aromas of blackberries, black cherries, black currants, black roses, pipe tobacco, sandalwood, violets, cracked pepper and oriental incense. The flavors, as well, are deep and powerful, with dark fruits that are infused with black licorice, 85% cacao, French press coffee and basaltic minerals. The penetration continues on the back with macerated berries, roasted walnuts, mocha, pulverized charcoal and another twist of pepper, followed by a long, satiny ripe tannin finish that is lifted by vigorous fruit acids. – Rand Sealy, 19+/20 points.

2016 Balboa Reserve Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, Stoney Vine Vineyard ($45)

One sniff and there is no question where this wine hails from. Brooding aromas of wet stone, moist earth, crushed plum, olive, raspberry, dried herbs and flowers are followed by pillowy, soft fruit and savory flavors. It’s a compelling offering from this vineyard, with an extended finish capping it off – Sean P. Sullivan, Wine Enthusiast, 92 points and Editor’s Choice.

2018 Balboa White Mith, Rhone Blend, Walla Walla Valley, ($22)

This blend offers a brilliant lemon-gold color and lovely, perfumed aromas of pear, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, papaya, pear blossoms, honeysuckle, jasmine and white incense. The flavors, as well, are distinctive, with vivid white fruits dancing on the palate, with notes of grape and pear skins, peach stones and minerals. The vivacity continues on the back with sensations of poire William and pêche liqueurs, grapefruit peel and touches of hazelnut and crème fraiche, followed by a lingering faintly honeyed dry finish – Rand Sealy, 19/20 points

2015 Balboa Grenache , Walla Walla Valley, Summit View Vineyard ($55)

A straightforward, red-berried grenache from a ridgetop above Seven Hills Vineyard, this wine’s cherry-bomb scents give way to flavors deepened by a modest inclusion of whole clusters. Acidity keeps the wine lively, agile enough to pair with corned beef – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 89 points.

This is an impressive Grenache. It exhibits a ruby-crimson color and seductive aromas of strawberries, mountain blueberries, red currants, rosebuds, lavender, white pepper and oriental incense. The flavors are simultaneously lavish and muscular, with layers of red fruits that are intermixed with licorice, cocoa, black tea and basaltic minerals. The wine invigorates on the back yet stays velvety, with sensations of pressed berries, roasted hazelnuts, orange peel and charcoal, followed by a lengthy, savory sweet-dry tannin finish – Rand Sealy, 19+/20 points.

2014 Balboa Mith, Walla Walla Valley, Eidolon Estate and Summit View Vineyards ($50)

Bright, dark red. Aromas of cassis, dark plum, licorice, herbs and spicy oak. Quite oaky on the palate too (but just 25% new French oak) but with surprising energy and shape to its sweet dark fruit and spice flavors. Notes of tobacco leaf, herbs and mint carry through the wine, leavening its sweetness. Finishes with firm, nicely integrated tannins that turned a bit dustier with air. This is the current release of this bottling, which was held back at the winery. – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 88 points

2016 Balboa Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, Eidolon Estate Vineyard ($40)

This is an impressive Syrah from The Rocks. It exhibits a ruby-crimson color and seductive aromas of raspberries, mountain blueberries, red currants, crushed roses, bayberry, lavender, orange peel, white pepper and oriental incense. The flavors are simultaneously lavish and muscular, with layers of red and blue fruits that are intermixed with licorice, cocoa, French roast and basaltic minerals. The wine invigorates on the back yet stays velvety, with sensations of pressed berries, roasted nuts, framboise and cassis liqueurs, orange peel and touches of kidskin and charcoal, followed by a lengthy, savory sweet-dry tannin finish – Rand Sealy, 19/20 points

2015 Balboa Mourvèdre, Red Mountain, The Canyons Vineyard ($55)

This is a powerful rendition of Mourvèdre. It boasts an opaque ruby color and intense aromas of wild fruits – blackberries, mountain blueberries, brambly currants – with scents of crushed black roses, mulberry, pipe tobacco, garrigue, anise and spiced incense. The flavors, as well, are bold and mouth filling, with thick dark fruits that are infused with licorice root, extra dark cocoa, Sumatra roast and Red Mountain scorched earth. The saturation continues on the back with roasted berries and nuts, burnt charcoal and baking spices, followed by a lingering chewy tannin finish – Rand Sealy, 19+/20 points

2015 Balboa Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre, Columbia Valley ($55)

Composed of one-third each of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, this shows a deep ruby-crimson color and a seductive nose of raspberries, mountain huckleberries, brambly currants, crushed roses, tobacco, garrigue, black violets and spiced oriental incense. The flavors are simultaneously bold and velvety, with layers of red and black fruits that are immersed with licorice, cocoa, French roast and minerals. The vigor continues on the back with macerated fruits, roasted pecans, mocha, toffee and toast, followed by a satiny spice dusted (nutmeg, cardamom) ripe tannin finish. The sensuousness gives it a plus – Rand Sealy, 19+/20 points.
